Lights, Camera, Strike?

Lights, camera, action! Well, maybe not so much action for the popular actual play series currently in production. The Hollywood actors’ strike, led by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), is causing quite a stir in Tinseltown. But fear not, fellow gamers and entertainment enthusiasts, the impact on our beloved gaming shows seems to be a mere blip on the radar.

Troupes in Focus

GameTopic reached out to several troupes, including Critical Role and Glass Cannon Network, to get the lowdown on how the strike would affect their streaming shows, video-on-demand archives, and related podcasts. And the verdict? No impact at all! It turns out that SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) aren’t regular players in the actual play productions we cherish.

Critical Role: Solidarity and a Safety Net

Critical Role, ever the supportive bunch, expressed their solidarity with the strike. In an email to GameTopic, they stated, “We fully support the strike and stand in solidarity with our fellow actors.” However, they assured fans that their release schedule remains unaffected, adding, “We will continue to evaluate and take necessary steps should it be impacted in the future.” Phew, crisis averted, for now.

Glass Cannon Network: Rules, Passion, and Business

When it comes to Glass Cannon, their CEO Troy Lavallee had a more measured response. In his own unique style, he reassured gamers that actual play podcasting and streaming exist in a realm untouched by anyone’s purview. He quipped, “There are enough rules in RPGs that the last thing we need is outside forces coming in to try and regulate how we gather together to play games.” We couldn’t agree more, Troy!

Lavallee went on to explain the importance of independent organizations, like Glass Cannon, providing inclusive and equitable spaces for performers, writers, and producers to express their passion and creativity. He expressed pride in turning their gaming love into a successful business, employing full-time staff who rely on content creation for their livelihood and health care. Nothing can stop the content creation machine they’ve worked so hard to build. Game on!

Where Do We Go From Here?

While Critical Role and Glass Cannon Network have assured us that the strike won’t disrupt our gaming fun, GameTopic continues to reach out to other troupes for their input. We’ll keep you updated on any new developments.

So, let’s grab our virtual dice, role-play to our hearts’ content, and revel in the fact that our favorite actual play series remain unaffected by the Hollywood theatrics. Game on, gamers!
