Baldur's Gate 3: Max Level Cap?

Baldur’s Gate 3 – Surviving Brainworms and Leveling Up!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Key Art

Welcome back to the thrilling world of Baldur’s Gate! In our long overdue return to the series, we join the escapees from an Illithid Ship, struggling to survive and desperate to remove the dreaded Illithid Tadpoles from their unfortunate heads. It’s a real brain-squishing adventure!

But let’s talk about the gameplay, shall we? Baldur’s Gate 3 draws heavy inspiration from the D&D 5e tabletop ruleset, which means you’re in for a wild ride. However, there’s one small difference we should address right off the bat (or tadpole). The level cap in the game is a bit lower than in D&D 5e. Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything!

Early Access – Dipping Your Toes in Tadpole Trouble!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access

In the early access release of Baldur’s Gate 3, you can reach a maximum level of 5. Sure, it may not sound like a ton, but trust us, it’s enough to get your spellcasting fix. Most spellcaster classes gain access to third-level spells by level 5, so you can start flinging fireballs like a pro. Plus, level 5 is when Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, and Barbarians gain Extra Attack. Who doesn’t love smacking things twice as hard?

At level 5, you also get to sample some of the subclass features and play around with feats and ability score improvements. It’s like a buffet of character customization. Keep in mind that early access only includes the first act of the game, so the level cap is tailored accordingly. We promise there’s more brainworm goodness to come!

Full Release – Reaching New Heights of Adventurous Awesomeness!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Full Release

Once the full release of Baldur’s Gate 3 arrives, prepare to level up even further! Larian Studios bumped up the level cap to a groovy 12, increasing it from the initially planned 10. Now that’s what we call progress!

With a level cap of 12, you’ll have access to spells up to level 6. That’s right, you can weave some truly epic magic into your adventures. On top of that, you’ll have three precious feats or ability score improvements to play with. Fighters get an extra bonus, scoring an additional feat or improvement at level 6. It’s like the game is rewarding you for being awesome.

However, brace yourself for some tough decisions. There’s not much room for error when it comes to multiclassing, given the limited number of levels. You won’t have access to spells of level 7 or higher, and if you’re aiming for those sweet level 6 spells, you can only dip one level into a different class. Warlocks, being the funky spellcasters they are, get a special treat with a single Level 6 “Mystic Arcanum” at Level 11. Prepare to unleash some eldritch power!

Now mark your calendars! Baldur’s Gate 3 is launching on August 3rd, 2023, for PC and Mac, and on September 6th, 2023, for PS5. It’s time to gather your party and dive headfirst into this brainworm-infested extravaganza!
