Although Baldur’s Gate 3 has an interesting cast of companions, none are quite as fearsome and adorable as the owlbear cub. Unfortunately, getting the cub takes some effort and a lot of time, but let me tell you, adding that mystical owlbear to your camp is worth it!

How To Find The Owlbear Nest
An owlbear and its cub can be found in a cave between the Druid Grove and the Blighted Village, just north of the bridge and close to where you’ll find Scratch the dog. Approach the cave and follow the tracks. Soon enough, you’ll come face to face with the fearsome owlbear.
Once you get close enough, a cutscene will begin. Now, you have a few options. You can use Animal Handling to study the owlbear’s behavior, back away by passing a Survival check, puff out your chest and roar by passing a Performance check, or go all-out and attack.
If you pass the Animal Handling check, you’ll expose the owlbear cub, which the owlbear is clearly protecting. You can then try to show it that you mean no harm, move toward it, back away slowly, or attack. But be prepared, failed checks or hostile behavior will result in the owlbear attacking you and your party. Unless that’s what you’re looking for, the owlbear will let you leave the cave.

If you decide to walk away and leave the owlbear alive with its cub, don’t worry, you’ll encounter the cub again at some point and be able to add it to your camp. But if you’re looking for some adventure, you can take the violent route and eliminate the mother owlbear. Just make sure to interact with the owlbear cub afterwards and refrain from turning it into a second victim.

Where To Find The Owlbear Cub

After the encounter in the cave, you can find the owlbear cub at the Goblin Camp, which is located west of the Druid Grove and Blighted Village. The cub can be found sitting on one side of the camp, surrounded by goblins. It’s hard to miss! Once you spot it, get ready for a unique experience.
When you try to interact with the cub, a goblin named Krolla will approach you and introduce you to a new and terrible sport called Chicken-Chasing. Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds… or is it?
Should You Play Chicken-Chase With Krolla?

Now, there are two different routes you can take to get the owlbear cub. You can save yourself some time and denounce Chicken-Chasing as the cruel sport it is or dive into the madness and partake in a game to earn some extra gold. Either way, you’ll get the same outcome in the end.
For the quickest route, simply condemn Chicken-Chasing altogether. Go back to Krolla, pretend you can’t remember the rules, and then firmly state that you refuse to play the game because it’s just plain cruel. The conversation will end there, and you can immediately talk to Krolla again and let her know that the cub is coming with you.
Here’s where you have different options. You can try to intimidate, persuade, or even buy the cub for 500 gold. But if you’re feeling clever, you can use your Illithid wisdom to convince Krolla that you’re a True Soul, and she’ll happily give you the cub as a gift. Cha-ching!
If you’re up for a challenge and some fun, you can play a round of Chicken-Chasing for a mere 30 gold. Feeling lucky? Wager 75 gold instead. Once you’ve won, claim your victory and talk to Krolla. She’ll try to tell you that Chicken-Chasing is a game only won by goblins, but you can intimidate or persuade her to give you your well-deserved earnings. After that, crack another conversation with her and confidently announce that the owlbear cub is joining your camp. The same options of persuading, intimidating, buying, or using your Illithid wisdom will be available.
Now, sit back and relax. The owlbear cub will disappear from the camp and magically reappear in your own camp a few nights later. It’s like Christmas, but with more feathers and growls.
