Baldur’s Gate 3: The Ultimate Thief Rogue Build

Are you ready to unleash your inner thief and wreak havoc in Baldur’s Gate 3? Then look no further than the Thief Rogue build! This build is based on the Thief subclass from Dungeons and Dragons, granting you an extra Bonus Action in combat. And trust me, in the current Early Access version of the game, where stealth is outrageously powerful, Thief Rogues are going to dominate the damage charts!
Overview of the Thief Rogue Build
The Thief Rogue is all about subterfuge, stealth, and dealing raw damage. It may not be the most complex build, but it more than makes up for it with its pure destructive force. Thanks to their expertise in Stealth, Thief Rogues can easily maneuver around the battlefield, setting up Sneak Attacks with ease. And once you reach Level 5, the Sneak Attack damage boost makes it even more devastating.
The most broken way to play a Thief Rogue is to keep them separate from the rest of the party before combat. Sneak to a vantage point, and BOOM! You can unleash a Sneak Attack for free, obliterating weak to medium-strength enemies in one shot. Plus, with the extra Bonus Action, Thief Rogues can practically remain stealthed forever or quickly Dash/Disengage to escape any dangerous situations.
But wait, there’s more! Thief Rogues also gain resistance to fall damage, because who needs to worry about taking a tumble when you’re too busy stealing hearts and gold?
Best Rogue Race: Wood Half-Elf

When it comes to picking a race for your Thief Rogue, the Wood Half-Elf is the clear winner. With the Fleet of Foot racial ability, your movement speed increases to a whopping 10.5 meters, making you incredibly swift and agile. And the Mask of the Wild passive grants you proficiency in Stealth, which is an absolute game-changer for this playstyle.

Best Rogue Subclass: Thief
The Thief Rogue subclass offers one simple, yet powerful benefit over the Arcane Trickster: an extra bonus action. With this extra Bonus Action, you can outrun enemies, slip away from Opportunity Attacks, attempt a second Hide action if the first one fails, and so much more. It’s like having a secret weapon that keeps you one step ahead of your opponents.
Best Rogue Proficiencies and Background: Urchin or Charlatan?
If you’ve chosen the Wood Half-Elf for your Thief Rogue BG3 build, then the Urchin background’s proficiency in Stealth is redundant due to your racial abilities. Instead, opt for the Charlatan background, which grants bonuses to Deception and Sleight of Hand. Alternatively, the Guild Artisan background provides proficiency in Insight and Persuasion, which can be handy in various situations.
A Choice at Level 4: Dual Wielder Feat or Ability Scores
At Level 4, Thief Rogues face a crucial decision: Do you take a feat or do you improve your ability scores? The answer lies in your preferred combat style. If you enjoy getting up close and personal with melee attacks, the Dual Wielder feat is a fantastic choice. It increases your AC when dual-wielding weapons and allows you to use the Two-Weapon Fighting style, even with non-light weapons.
On the other hand, if ranged combat is more of your jam, focus on improving your ability scores, particularly Dexterity. This will enhance your accuracy and damage output with ranged weapons, making you a force to be reckoned with from a safe distance.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available in Early Access and will be fully released for PC on August 3, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version is set to launch on September 6, 2023. And for all the Xbox Series X/S owners out there, don’t worry, a version for you is also in the works.
Now go forth, oh mighty Thief Rogue, and let your cunning and stylish thievery shape the fate of Baldur’s Gate 3!
