Cyberpunk 2077: 4 Surprising Facts About Johnny Silverhand
Uncovering the Legendary Rebel Rocker Boy – Johnny Silverhand
Johnny Silverhand, the charismatic cybernetic rocker bad boy portrayed by Keanu Reeves, has stolen the hearts of the Cyberpunk fanbase. Initially, he comes across as hostile and antagonistic in Cyberpunk 2077, but he gradually warms up to the main character V and players alike.
As V and Silverhand embark on missions and challenge Night City’s Corpo overlords, players learn more about Silverhand’s motivations and beliefs. However, not all of the fascinating information about Silverhand is well-known to fans. While shards of deeper lore can be uncovered, the origins and transformation of Silverhand from Robert John Lindre to the legendary rebel rocker of 2077 remain largely hidden.
4. His Dog Tags
In the aftermath of the war, many American soldiers deserted or rebelled against the corrupt American government, and Johnny was one of them. He fled to Night City, where he founded his band, Samurai, and left behind the name Robert John Lindre to become the infamous Johnny Silverhand.
During the main questline, there’s a pivotal moment where Johnny reflects on his time in the army with V at a run-down motel. He briefly shares the story of how he lost his best friend in the war, as well as his arm. To prove his loyalty to V, he gives them dog tags that supposedly belonged to his best friend. A touching and connecting moment, right? Well, here’s the twist: the dog tags Johnny gives to V are actually his own. They bear the name Robert John Lindre, a fact unbeknownst to both players and V.
3. False Flashbacks
Throughout the main storyline, players are treated to glimpses of Johnny Silverhand’s past as their memories intertwine due to their shared consciousness. Two flashback missions put players in the shoes of Johnny Silverhand, one in 2023 and the other in 2013. However, upon closer inspection, players discover that these events are far from the truth.
- Pokemon GO’s Squirtle Community Day is getting a makeup event...
- FF16 players may have found out Leviathan’s current dominance.
- July 2023 Honkai: Star Rail Redeem Codes
The first flashback, where Johnny is introduced into the story, is the more inaccurate of the two. While it is true that Johnny participated in the assault on Arasaka in 2023, he wasn’t the leader of the operation. That role was actually filled by Morgan Blackhand, another legendary figure in Night City who is entirely omitted from Johnny’s flashback.
2. His True Demise
Perhaps the biggest deception players face is the supposed death of Johnny Silverhand. In reality, he never made it back to the rooftop for a grand showdown with Adam Smasher. Instead, Johnny died during their initial encounter. The rivalry between Smasher and Silverhand is exaggerated in the retelling, as they had little to no interaction before that fatal event.
It’s worth noting that Johnny takes the place of Morgan Blackhand in the true events. Blackhand and Smasher had been rivals for years, and it was they who had the rooftop showdown. In 2023, Smasher didn’t hold Johnny in high regard and dispatched the rebel rocker boy with ease before he could even reach the rooftop.
1. Reasons for the Lies
The second flashback, set in 2013, details Johnny’s mission to save Alt Cunningham alongside Rogue and Thompson. This mission is mostly true, except for a scene where a grief-stricken Johnny, consumed by rage over the loss of Alt, brutally beats Thompson. Silverhand later tells V that this incident soured their relationship and they never worked together again. However, this is yet another lie, as Johnny’s voice can be heard on the comms during the 2023 flashback.
The modifications to Johnny’s memories could be attributed to Arasaka’s interference. After all, Silverhand’s engram was under Corpo control for fifty years, likely tampered with by the shady and manipulative organization. Another reason for these alterations is revealed by Alt Cunningham herself later in the story. She points out that what players witness is a subjective retelling from Johnny’s point of view, not the actual truth. Like anyone else, Johnny omits certain details and lies to V and even to himself.
While Johnny Silverhand is an incredible character who forms an epic bond with V throughout the story of Cyberpunk, most fans are unaware of his true past. Despite being a great companion and offering advice, he occasionally hides the truth or confuses facts. In any case, these are details that most people don’t know about the legendary rebel rocker boy.
