In 2019, Nintendo gave us a beautifully remade version of their classic Game Boy game, “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.” The toy-like 3D visuals were a delight, but one fan-made remaster takes a different approach, keeping the original look while still impressing gamers everywhere.
Welcome to “Link’s Awakening DX HD.” This fan-made remaster adds widescreen and high frame-rate support, creating a contiguous, smooth-scrolling landscape. You can now zoom out and see the whole of Koholint Island at once, and boy, is it a sight to behold! The island comes alive with tiny, pixelated creatures scurrying to and fro. It’s like a bustling miniature universe right before your eyes!
The game engine of Link’s Awakening DX HD runs every screen simultaneously, seamlessly blending it all into one cohesive experience. And guess what? The game remains entirely playable in this zoomed-out view. If you have a big monitor and sharp eyesight, you can dive into Koholint Island on a whole new level. It’s jaw-droppingly incredible!
But hold on, there’s more. This remaster also includes an autosave function and a few graphical enhancements. After my initial awe of the zoomed-out island, I returned to the default game scale and was blown away by the smoothness, liveliness, and crisp controls. With 120 frames per second, the whole widescreen frame buzzes with activity. Talk about an open-world experience!

Now, before you get too excited, I must mention that Link’s Awakening DX HD is currently available as a free download on itch.io. However, given Nintendo’s usual stance on fan-made projects and copyrights, it’s uncertain how long it will remain accessible. Especially since this is a free remake of a game they currently charge for on Switch Online. The anonymous creator must have known the risks involved.
Nevertheless, Link’s Awakening DX HD is not just a proof of concept; it’s a fascinating glimpse into a unique way of enhancing retro games for the modern age. I highly recommend Zelda fans (and maybe even Nintendo themselves) to check it out. After all, Link’s Awakening is truly a masterpiece.
