No more complicated setups to play with friends online! Along with this exciting update comes a slew of gameplay changes and enhancements, including some exciting updates for our favorite Tiefling race.

1. The Infernal Etymology

The Name Represented Someone From Below

It’s no coincidence that Tieflings were cleverly named to represent creatures from the lower planes. Game designer Wolfgang Baur brilliantly combined the German word “tief,” meaning “deep, low,” with the suffix “-ling,” which means “offspring.” Thus, Tiefling loosely translates to “offspring from the lower flames.” Another theory suggests that the term may have derived from “Teufel,” the German word for “devil.”

This complex terminology was necessary as D&D back in the ’90s faced criticism for its depictions of devils and demons, suggestive art, and evil-aligned character conventions.

2. Originally Introduced In Planescape, 2E

Simply Known As One With Otherworldly Heritage

While Tieflings are now well-known as a playable race in Dungeons & Dragons, they were initially introduced as creatures in the Planescape Campaign Setting of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2E. Planescape is all about exploring the different planes of existence in the vast D&D multiverse. So, Tieflings are described as humans dwelling within the planes with a touch of otherworldly heritage, possibly from evil beings like demons or devils. Unlike half-fiends, Tieflings are further down the family tree, resulting in their more human-like appearance.

3. Appearance Initially Had A Lot Of Random Elements

Randomized Appearance Reflected Otherworldly Origins

In the beginning, Tieflings had a more random and diverse appearance. In 2E, Tieflings were described as having one defining feature that revealed their infernal heritage, such as horns. The Planeswalker’s Handbook even introduced a randomizer table for Dungeon Masters to generate other unique features for Tieflings, like red eyes, goat legs, and supernatural abilities. And let’s not forget the iconic Dungeon Magazine depiction of Tieflings, with horns for eyebrows and pink skin, which heavily influenced their appearances in later editions.

4. Have Had Various Creation Methods

May Be Created Through Reproduction, Magic

While Tieflings from Bael Turath have a strong connection with Asmodeus and the Nine Hells, not all Tieflings trace their lineage back to him. Tieflings can be created through various creative methods, adding a wealth of possibilities for character creation. Some humans can use powerful dark magic to transform into Tieflings, while extraplanar beings can assume humanoid form and interbreed with other races, producing Tiefling offspring. It’s even possible for Tieflings to breed with other races, resulting in the chance for subsequent generations to produce more Tieflings.

5. Non-Human Tieflings Did Exist

Tieflings May Exist For Dwarves, Elves, And Orcs

While humans are the most common basis for Tieflings, Tieflings can have ties to other prominent races as well. For example, the Fey’ri are the result of interbreeding between Sun Elves and demonic Tanar’ri. Another variant, the Tanarukk, are Orcs who have interbred with evil-aligned entities. And it doesn’t stop there! Tiefling variants also exist for Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Halflings, Trolls, and Minotaurs, bestowing them with unique abilities and characteristics.

6. Counter To The Aasimar

The Infernal Counter To The Celestial Aasimar

Just as Tieflings embody infernal origins, there exists a celestial counterpart known as the Aasimar. In D&D lore, Aasimar are believed to have divine origins and can take on physical characteristics associated with beings such as celestial creatures. Compared to the unmistakably fiendish features of Tieflings, Aasimar exude physical beauty with golden eyes, silvery hair, and even the possibility of wings. It’s a balancing act between the celestial and infernal in this cosmic struggle.

7. Not All Are From The Nine Hells

Some Tieflings Are From Beyond The Realms

Although Tieflings are commonly associated with the Nine Hells and Asmodeus, not all Tieflings share this lineage. Some Tieflings can trace their origins to evil beings from other planes of existence, such as rakshasas, evil deities, or various other fiends. These Tieflings may lack the typical traits observed in regular Tieflings, exhibiting unique physical characteristics such as cat eyes, furry skin, or even completely different appendages.

8. Enter The Level Adjustment System

Initially Monsters Before Player Characters

Before becoming an official playable race, Tieflings made their debut as creatures in the “Monster Manual” for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition. The addition of Tieflings as a playable race came later in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. However, it wasn’t as straightforward as simply choosing Tiefling from the start. Dungeons & Dragons 3E introduced the Level Adjustment system to balance the power of more potent races like Tieflings. This system allowed players to use powerful races while keeping gameplay balanced.

9. Manipulated For Asmodeus’s Godly Pursuit

Once A Tool For Asmodeus’ Godhood

The backstory and history of Tieflings were further developed across novels like Brimstone Angels. In this series, Asmodeus enacts a plan to achieve godhood, using a group of warlocks known as the Toril Thirteen to curse Tiefling bloodlines and make him the so-called “God of Tieflings.” Before Asmodeus’ rise, Tieflings could weaken their infernal bloodline through intermarriage. However, recent developments see the revival of older bloodlines, bringing back diverse Tiefling characteristics.

10. Modernized In Urban Arcana

Became A Part Of D&D’s Urban Setting

Tieflings don’t just exist in the traditional medieval fantasy settings of D&D. They’ve also found their place in Urban Arcana, a campaign setting that combines the magic and fantasy of TTRPG with the modern world akin to Earth. In this unique setting, Tieflings retain their horns and tails but appear as regular humans to those unable to perceive the Shadow, the supernatural essence that allows the fantastical to coexist with the mundane.

11. Formally A Core Race Only In 4E

Became An Official Player’s Handbook Race In 2008

It wasn’t until the release of Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition that Tieflings became a core playable race. This edition finally introduced the iconic appearance we associate with Tieflings today – pink or red skin, curved horns for eyebrows, long tails, and an overall menacing presence. However, it was Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition that pioneered the Level Adjustment system, allowing Tieflings and other powerful races to be playable while maintaining balance.

12. Expanded In 5E

Offered More History, Variants In 5E

More recently, Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition expanded on the history and playability options for Tieflings, offering players even more flexibility with their characters. Tieflings retain most of their aesthetics and lore from 4th Edition but are now considered an uncommon race. The introduction of Variant Tieflings in “The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide” adds unique customization options, diversifying Tiefling abilities and appearances beyond the traditional mold.

13. The Variant Origins Of Today’s Tiefling

Tieflings Can Have Special Variations

While the typical Tiefling appearance includes horns and a prehensile tail, Variant Tieflings open up a world of possibilities for character customization. These special variations represent Tieflings whose characteristics come from an origin other than Asmodeus, giving them unique abilities and features. Variations such as Wings, forked tongues, fangs, scaly skin, or cloven hooves offer players even more choice in tailoring their Tiefling characters to suit their vision.

14. The Different Bloodlines Of D&D 5e’s Tiefling

Asmodeus Isn’t The Only Progenitor Of Tieflings

While Asmodeus has long been associated with Tieflings, there are other bloodlines to consider. Dungeon Masters can introduce Tiefling Bloodlines into their campaigns, providing players with a range of histories and specialties. Each bloodline represents a tie to a specific domain, such as corruption, secrets, charm, thievery, cold, death, or even magic itself. This addS a whole new layer of depth and intrigue to Tiefling characters and their stories.

15. The Tiefling Switch-Up For Upcoming One D&D

Expected Changes To Tieflings In The New Handbook

Get ready for a Tiefling transformation, adventurers! With the release of the updated Player’s Handbook in 2024, Tieflings will see exciting changes to their mechanics. These updates aim to provide players with more flexibility in character creation. Tieflings now receive Darkvision and Thaumaturgy as standard features, while Lineages – Abyssal, Chthonic, and Infernal – replace traditional subraces. These new Lineages offer themed options related to poisons, ice, and fire.

16. Popularized In Brimstone Angels

Farideh Became The Representative Of Tieflings

In the world of D&D, few characters have done as much for Tiefling representation as Farideh from the Brimstone Angels series. Penned by Erin Evans at the peak of D&D 4th Edition, this captivating story follows the adventures of twin Tiefling siblings, Farideh and Havilar. It challenges the stereotypes surrounding Tieflings, showing that a character’s race shouldn’t define their worth. Farideh’s journey as a Warlock also serves as a reference for character development in future books.

Tieflings’ popularity extends beyond the tabletop game and into the digital realm. Several popular D&D video games highlight Tiefling characters, becoming fan favorites among players. Let’s take a look at a few notable examples:

đŸ”„ Karlach, Baldur’s Gate 3: Despite her bubbly and over-eager nature, Karlach seeks revenge on the Archdevil Zariel for forcing her into the Blood War.

đŸ”„ Neeshka, Neverwinter Nights 2: Abandoned as a child, Neeshka’s soft-spoken and fiercely loyal nature makes her a beloved character for Rogue-type builds.

đŸ”„ Annah, Planescape: Torment: Brash and sarcastic, Annah becomes a Tiefling due to her fiendish grandparents. She excels as a Fighter/Thief and offers unique interactions within the game.
