Larval Tears, the magical items in Elden Ring that let you do a complete do-over with your character, are as precious as a one-of-a-kind legendary weapon. These Tears allow you to redistribute all those hard-earned stat points and explore new playstyles or fix any regrettable choices you’ve made along the way. It’s like hiring a top-tier therapist, but without the hefty bill.
But don’t go triggering a virtual identity crisis just yet. Respeccing isn’t as simple as doing a makeover montage. You’ll need Larval Tears, which unfortunately are limited in quantity. So before you start fiddling with your character’s inner workings like a mad scientist, make sure you use them judiciously. Unless you’re a serial-respeccer who can’t decide if you’re a knight or a wizard, there should be enough Larval Tears to correct any major mistakes or realign your character when necessary. Just remember, excessive respeccing may lead to unpredictable side effects like questionable fashion choices and invisible walls of shame.

Which Enemies Drop Larval Tears?
As expected, Larval Tears don’t just grow on trees… or whatever passes for trees in Elden Ring. These precious drops come from enemies that undergo a dramatic transformation when defeated. Some of these transformations will make you question your life choices, while others will make you question why you’re even playing this game.
Location | Initial Enemy | Transformation | How To Locate |
---|---|---|---|
Limgrave | Wandering Noble | Runebear | Head to the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace and head east. The Wandering Noble stands alone on the edge of a cliff like an emo teenager. |
Liurnia of the Lakes | Giant Crayfish | Grafted Scion | Near the Folly on the Lake Site of Grace, there’s a group of four Giant Crayfish. One of them is awake and alert, ready to drop a Larval Tear. |
Caelid | Wandering Noble | Troll | In the graveyard south of the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace and west of the Cathedral of Dragon Communion, you’ll find this Wandering Noble. |
Altus Plateau | Wandering Noble | Lion Guardian | Explore the ruins east of the Minor Erdtree in the region. Start your journey from the Windmill Village Site of Grace and head south. |
Consecrated Snowfield | Wandering Noble | Runebear | Close to the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace, three Wandering Nobles can be found. One of them is buried in snow, waiting to transform. |
Mt. Gelmir | Putrid Corpse | Wormface | In the encampment next to the Road of Iniquity Site of Grace, there’s a fiery Putrid Corpse willing to cough up a Larval Tear. |
But transformation isn’t the only way to earn Larval Tears. For a more straightforward approach, you can slay all Silver Sphere enemies, those speedy smooth balls that roll towards you like they’re late for a rock concert. Except for one exception, all these Silver Spheres will drop a Larval Tear upon death. There’s one lurking in Nokron, Eternal City, and three in Nokstella, Eternal City. Just remember, these enemies won’t keep shedding Tears, so don’t expect an endless supply of respec opportunities.

And let’s not forget the Mimic Tear boss fights. Defeating the Mimic Tear in Nokron, Eternal City will reward you with the sweet satisfaction of two Larval Tears. The Mimic Tear in Haligtree, however, is stingy and keeps all the Tears to itself. Greedy little boss.
Where To Purchase Larval Tears?
In case you prefer a more capitalist approach to Larval Tears, there are two opportunities to exchange your hard-earned runes for these precious items:
- Caria Manor is home to Pidia, a merchant hanging out in one of the rooms. To reach this elusive salesperson, you must first complete the area and defeat Royal Knight Loretta. Once the boss is vanquished, head left from her arena, use the platforms to drop down, and voila, Pidia awaits.
- For a more nomadic shopping experience, visit the Nomadic Merchant in Siofra River. You’ll find them near the brazier puzzle, probably talking loudly to attract customers. To reach them, climb the scaffolding in the middle of the area, jump to the nearby connected caves, and follow the sound of their enthusiastic sales pitch.
Both merchants are kind enough to offer Larval Tears at the reasonable price of 3,000 runes each. Bargain!
All Larval Tear Loot Locations
If you’re a treasure hunter with an eye for the rare and extraordinary, there are a few Larval Tears hidden throughout Elden Ring. Here are the locations where you can snag some Tears without having to face ear-shattering transformations:
- The Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia of the Lakes hides the earliest obtainable Larval Tear. Venture to the graveyard beneath the large landmass to the southwest of the village, and there it awaits, patiently yearning for a new owner.
In the maze of Nokron, Eternal City, you’ll find two other Larval Tears, waiting to be plucked from their hiding spots:
- Explore the buildings near the Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace, but watch out for the enemies lurking in the shadows. One of the Tears can be found amidst this chilling ambiance.
- Just before the Mimic Tear boss fight, inside a small structure, a rain of Silver Tears will descend upon you. Shake off their hypnotic allure and claim the Tears that lie within.
The reward for completing one of Elden Ring’s painting quests is another Larval Tear. First, acquire the Resurrection Painting at the Artist’s Shack, located north of the entrance to the Carian Study Hall. After obtaining this artistic treasure, scour the graveyard to the north of Caria Manor for a ghost. To unlock its ethereal gaze, you must first defeat Royal Knight Loretta. Once the ghost is ready to chat, you’ll be rewarded with a Larval Tear. Who said art couldn’t be lucrative?
How To Respec Your Character In Elden Ring
So, you’ve got a shiny collection of Larval Tears, and you’re ready to reinvent yourself. Respeccing, much like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, is a transformational experience. Here’s how to go about it:
- First, you’ll need to defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, who reigns as the boss of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. Once she’s defeated, she’ll offer her services as a makeover expert. Interact with her to change your appearance or dive into the mystical art of respeccing.
However, there are a few ground rules when it comes to reshaping your stats:
- Your level remains unchanged, so you must allocate the same number of points as your current build. It’s like rearranging furniture in a room with strict dimensions. If you’ve leveled up 80 times, you’ll need to invest 80 points, no more, no less.
- Stat levels cannot be reduced below their initial values, no matter how much you beg, plead, or bribe. This ensures you can’t unload all your points into a single powerhouse stat at the expense of others.
Once you’ve delicately allocated your precious stat points, hit that Confirm button to solidify your choices and wave goodbye to one of your Larval Tears. Its sacrifice will be remembered, or at least briefly mourned, as you embark on your newly refined path.
