Fnaf movie has second-biggest game adaptation debut ever
Move over, Super Mario Bros, there’s a new video game adaptation in town! The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, brought to life by Universal and Blumhouse, has taken the box office by storm. Just last week, it raked in a whopping $78 million in North America and a staggering $130 million globally. Talk about a record-breaking start!
According to the folks at Variety, this makes Five Nights at Freddy’s the second-largest debut ever for a video game adaptation in the US. It only falls behind the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie from Nintendo and Illumination, which brought in $146.3 million. You go, Mario!
But that’s not all! This horror flick has also claimed the throne as the biggest horror movie opening of 2023 worldwide, leaving The Nun 2 trembling in its shadow with $88.1 million. And in the US, it scored the third-biggest debut for any horror film, right behind those spine-chilling It movies. Admit it, Freddy has some serious scares up his animatronic sleeves!
Sure, the critics haven’t exactly been kind to our haunted friends from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The Guardian called it “a competently made yet maddeningly dull attempt to bring the hit video game to the big screen.” Ouch. And The Independent labeled it a “bloodless, generic take” on the beloved game series. But hey, at least Freddy did better than that forgettable Uncharted film starring Tom Holland. So let’s give him a round of applause!
Not only did Five Nights at Freddy’s impress at the box office, but it also secured a spot in Blumhouse history as their highest-grossing global opening ever. Talk about a scream come true!
