The Best Gundam Lineups in History: Gundam 00 Delivers

Gundam 00 Exia and Dynames

Every major Gundam series has its own unique and iconic mobile suits. While the main Gundam often steals the spotlight, the supporting Gundams also have their distinct features that make them memorable. But of all the Gundam series out there, Gundam 00 stands tall as the one with the absolute best lineup of Gundams. Allow us to explain why we think so!

Highly Specialized Gundams

Gundam 00 Kyrios and Virtue

In most series, the Gundams, especially the main one, are designed to be a jack-of-all-trades. And it makes sense, being the most advanced mobile suits in the universe. They need to be able to handle all sorts of situations without much support from others. From the original RX-78-2 Gundam to the Gundam Aerial in The Witch from Mercury, we’ve seen this pattern repeated over and over.

But Gundam 00 takes a different approach. The four Gundams in this series are developed simultaneously, each specializing in a different field. After all, a one-size-fits-all approach won’t cut it for indiscriminate armed intervention. That’s why Gundam 00 features a highly specialized team of Gundams capable of tackling any mission and executing various military tactics.

Let’s meet the team. First, we have Gundam Exia, specializing in close-quarter combat. Then comes Gundam Kyrios, designed for high-mobility and aerial combat. Next up is Gundam Dynames, specializing in stealth and long-range attacks. And finally, we have Gundam Virtue, the heavy artillery specialist. Together, they make the perfect unit to intervene in all sorts of wars and conflicts.

Utilitarian Design

Each major Gundam series has its own distinct style of Gundams. Some look strange and unconventional, while others are sleek and modern. Looking at the franchise as a whole, style usually takes precedence over practicality or real-life usage.

But Gundam 00 breaks the mold. The design philosophy behind its Gundams follows their specialized nature. They emphasize utilitarian use, focusing on combat roles and abilities instead of just looking cool. Don’t get us wrong though, these Gundams still manage to be visually striking and aesthetically pleasing.

Continuing from before, Exia’s compact body and limbs make it incredibly agile and flexible, perfectly suited for close-range combat. Instead of a standard backpack and skirt armor, Exia boasts an arsenal of melee weapons. On the other hand, Kyrios is the slimmest Gundam in the series, designed for lightweight high-mobility maneuvers.

Let’s move on to Dynames, the long-range specialist armed with an ultra long-range sniper rifle and giant shields for maximum protection. And last but not least, Gundam Virtue, with its massive body and limbs, carries an impressive array of missiles, cannons, and other heavy armaments. It may be bulky, but its immense firepower more than makes up for it.

As you can see, unlike the general-purpose Gundams from other series, the Gundams in Gundam 00 have distinct roles and specializations. They are highly effective at what they do, intervening in every kind of war or conflict. Their designs and abilities reflect these roles and specializations, making Gundam 00 stand out with the best Gundam lineup in the franchise’s history.

Gundam 00 is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
