Imagine the excitement! At the Final Fantasy 14 FanFest 2023 North America, gamers from all over were lining up for the chance to take on Asura, the upcoming Primal Trial. And of course, I couldn’t resist diving headfirst into the frenzy.
Now, getting into the fight wasn’t easy. The online queue was a battle of its own, requiring attendees to uninstall and reinstall the app just to get it working properly. But the determined Warriors of Light forged through, marking their place in line, ready to face this new challenge.
Trials in Final Fantasy 14 are like epic boss fights on steroids, and they’re my personal favorite part of the game. So naturally, I was itching to take on Asura and see how she stacked up against previous Trials like Nidhogg, Golbez, and Susano. In the queue, I teamed up with an impressive group of veterans, including James Galizio of RPGSite and four legendary Warriors of Light – Thallan Gildeford, King Ma, Ishtar Valentine, Worstluck NA, and Kini Solis.
While waiting in line, we strategized and discussed which Job Classes to play. As a seasoned healer, I confidently declared myself the White Mage. Tanking and DPSing are fun too, but healing is where I shine like a beacon of hope. And with our hotbars set up and skills in all the right places, we were primed and ready to take on Asura.

But here’s the kicker: Asura turned out to be a bit of a pushover. Despite my sub lapsing for months, my co-healing skills were on point, seamlessly blending with our Sage’s healing prowess. Maybe it was a testament to his shocking brilliance or the fact that White Mage is so darn easy to pick up again. Who knows? But Asura was, dare I say, a cakewalk.
She had all the trademark mechanics of a Final Fantasy 14 fight – telegraphed attacks, tank-busters that make your jaw drop, and orange AoEs on the ground that threatened to toast our toes. Oh, and let’s not forget the super-sized Asura channeling her power and forcing us to evade those pesky orange rings. Sadly, I missed out on the mesmerizing music because my setup decided to go mute. Hey, it happens.
The battle with Asura flew by in a flash, leaving us stunned for a moment before erupting in cheers and congratulations. As we basked in our glorious victory, I bid my team farewell, wishing them luck on their next Ultimate fight. Then it was back to my hotel room to cool down (and maybe do a happy dance).
Now, I can’t help but wonder why Asura was such a breeze. Was it because of our rock-solid group, or did Creative Business Unit 3 intentionally provide a more approachable challenge for all players? If it’s the latter, they absolutely nailed it. Gone are the days of players getting stuck and desperately resorting to Party Finder for salvation. I’m eagerly awaiting the Extreme fight version of Asura, itching to see how it ramps up the mechanics.
In the end, my encounter with Asura wasn’t just a brief stint in the game. It was an opportunity to connect and bond with fellow gamers, albeit for a mere five minutes. And hey, sometimes those brief moments of camaraderie are what make gaming truly special.
