In Starfield, there are some non-lethal options, but doing a pacifist playthrough may not be totally feasible.

Starfield, the upcoming spacefaring RPG, is making waves with its talk-your-way-out-of-trouble gameplay. But hey, don’t get your hopes up for a true pacifist run, because according to the devs, it’s not “totally feasible.” Ugh, why must they crush our dreams like that?

During a recent Discord Q&A session, lead quest designer Will Shen and lead designer Emil Pagliarulo spilled the beans on the possibility of a non-violent playthrough. Basically, the idea is to avoid killing anyone or anything in the game. Sounds like a noble goal, right? Well, not so fast.

Shen explains that Starfield has a nifty system called the Speech Challenge game. With this, you can convince others to do your bidding without resorting to fisticuffs. It’s like Oblivion’s persuasion system, but jazzed up for the modern era. Exciting stuff!

But hold on tight, because here comes Pagliarulo with a dose of reality. “We had high hopes for a ‘non-lethal’ playthrough, but it turns out it’s not totally feasible,” he says. Bummer, right? However, fear not! There are still some non-lethal options in the game. You can wield non-lethal weapons or use dialogue to navigate tricky situations. So, while you won’t be able to go on a killing spree, you can still unleash your inner pacifist in many quests. You win some, you lose some.

Shen chimes in again to clarify that the speech challenge game isn’t available for every moment in the game. It’s sprinkled into specific scripted moments and is usually present when important characters confront you. So, prepare your silver tongue for those crucial encounters!

Here’s the deal, though. The Settled Systems in Starfield are relatively civilized, but if you decide to venture off the beaten path, be prepared for some serious danger. Yeah, those trenches and the margins of the world are not for the faint-hearted. Looks like the enemies in those areas aren’t keen on having a nice chat.

Exciting news for all the eager gamers out there: Starfield has officially gone gold! Xbox players can start pre-loading the game tomorrow, August 17. As for PC players, you’ll have to practice patience and wait until August 30 to pre-load this mammoth RPG. The anticipation is killing us!

If you’re itching for more Starfield goodness, you’re in luck. Bethesda just dropped a massive 300 years of backstory for the game. 300 years! Wow, that’s a lot of lore to dive into. Better get reading and prepare yourself for the epic journey ahead.
