Land Above Sea Below: A Tile-Based Puzzle Game Like No Other!
If you’re anything like me, you can’t get enough of those Dorfromantik-likes. You know, the chill, tile-based puzzles that let you immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Well, get ready to add another game to your collection because Land Above Sea Below is here to steal your heart and test your strategic skills.
I stumbled upon this gem during the Steam Next Fest, where it was available as a demo. And now, much to my delight, it’s back with a bang as a free prologue. Let me tell you, this game is unlike anything you’ve played before.
In Land Above Sea Below, your journey starts with a majestic Tree of Fall. Surrounding this tree, you’ll strategically place tiles to grow your island and combat the rising sea levels. But beware! If the Tree of Fall gets flooded, it’s game over. No pressure, right?
Now, here’s where the game gets really special. Unlike other Dorfromantik-likes, Land Above Sea Below has some unique rules that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Each tile represents a specific biome, and in this prologue, you’ll encounter three delightful biomes.
To score points and raise the height of your island, you must place tiles of the same biome next to each other. Simple, right? Well, not quite. If you want to raise tile height, you’ll need to create a synergy by placing a tile next to three or more tiles of the same biome type. Trust me, making synergies adds a thrilling layer of complexity to the game.

As you progress, you’ll witness the changing seasons, which bring both joy and trepidation. Every seven tiles, a new season begins, and with it, the sea level rises. Can you keep up? Can you beat the clock before your beautiful creation succumbs to the merciless waves?
But don’t worry, the game throws you a lifeline in the form of special tile types. River tiles, available in various shapes, will keep adjacent tiles of their biome above sea level at all times. However, be cautious! Placing a river will separate any land it cuts through, creating separate sections that require careful attention and strategic planning.
Speaking of planning, each turn of the season reveals the upcoming biome and tile type. This allows for short-term strategizing and introduces an exciting risk-reward element. Sometimes, you might end up with a tile you can’t immediately use, forcing you to ponder your next move. Should you strive for that juicy four-tile synergy or play it safe and end the season early? Decisions, decisions!
The prologue of Land Above Sea Below features 10 awe-inspiring seasons, providing a taste of what’s to come. The full game promises even more biomes and special tiles, guaranteeing endless strategic planning and heart-pounding deliberation. Trust me, the challenge only gets more intense as you try to keep the Tree of Fall afloat and witness the devastating effects of rising sea levels.
Land Above Sea Below trades the cozy idyll of Dorfromantik for the harsh reality of global warming. Time is of the essence in this game, but at least here, you can pretend that the fate of the world can be solved by your brain power alone. Talk about an ego boost!
So, fellow gamers, grab your thinking caps and prepare to embark on an extraordinary tile-based adventure in Land Above Sea Below.
