The State of the Game Industry: Layoffs and Uncertainty 🎮

35% of game developers have experienced layoffs in the past 12 months, and half are worried about further job cuts...

According to a GDC survey, one-third of developers have been affected by layoffs in the past year.

The gaming industry, like any other, is not immune to the effects of layoffs and job uncertainty. In fact, a recent report by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) reveals that 35 percent of game developers have experienced job cuts in the last 12 months, with concerns growing about further layoffs in the future.

📊 Layoffs: A Harsh Reality

According to GDC’s State of the Game Industry report, out of the 3,000 industry professionals surveyed, 54 percent reported no layoffs at their company in the past year. However, an alarming 35 percent stated that they or their colleagues had lost their jobs during that time. The impact of these cuts has been felt most heavily in quality assurance (QA) positions, with 22 percent of QA workers reporting layoffs, compared to just seven percent of all developers.

💔 Future Uncertainty

Looking ahead, 56 percent of those surveyed expressed concerns about the possibility of more layoffs within the next 12 months. They cited post-pandemic course correction, studio conglomeration, and economic uncertainty as the most likely reasons behind this worry. It’s clear that job security has become a pressing issue within the industry.

🤝 Unionization: Strong Support

Beyond layoffs, the report delves into other significant topics within the gaming industry. When it comes to unionization, a substantial 57 percent of developers surveyed expressed explicit support, while only 12 percent held contrasting views. Interestingly, the younger demographic, particularly those aged 18-24, displayed the highest level of support for unionization. This shows a growing recognition of the need for collective rights among game developers.

🧠 AI Becoming More Common

Another important aspect explored in the report is the use of generative AI tools. A surprising 31 percent of industry workers admitted to employing these tools themselves, with business and finance departments leading the way at 44 percent. Other departments utilizing generative AI included community, marketing, and PR (33 percent), as well as production and team management (33 percent). Surprisingly, programming and engineering departments ranked the lowest at 25 percent. However, the impact of AI on the industry seemed to vary depending on the specific job role, with developers in narrative, visual arts, and QA expressing concerns, while those in business, marketing, and programming viewed the technology more optimistically.

💀 Blockchain: Not a Developer’s Best Friend

When it comes to blockchain technology, including cryptocurrency and NFTs, the consensus among surveyed developers was overwhelmingly negative. A staggering 77 percent showed little to no interest in utilizing this tech in their projects. It appears that the gaming industry, despite its constant drive for innovation, remains skeptical about embracing blockchain.

🔝 Rise of In-Game Accessibility

On a positive note, in-game accessibility options have seen a significant increase. This year, 48 percent of developers reported implementing such options in their games, compared to 38 percent in the previous year. This shows a collective effort to make gaming more accessible to a wider audience, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the immersive and inclusive experience that games offer.

💔 Engine Roulette: Switching Game Engines

In a year filled with unexpected twists and turns, it’s no surprise that developers have considered or even made the switch to different game engines. A notable 35 percent of developers surveyed revealed that they either switched or considered switching game engines in the past year. Unity and Unreal Engine remain the top choices, with usage at 33 percent each. Proprietary or in-house engines followed closely behind at 14 percent.
