The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero: A Photo Mode Revamp in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

With the Pokemon World Championships of 2023 about to start, players were treated to a Pokemon Presents event filled with exciting news and updates for the franchise. However, fans of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had to stick around until the very end for a special announcement about The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, the upcoming DLC. Let’s dive into what players can expect from both parts of this expansion.

The first piece of the DLC is set to launch on September 13, and during the presentation, The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk were explained in detail. The Teal Mask introduces a whole new land of adventure called Kitakami. Players can explore this new area, encounter and catch the elusive Loyal Three Pokemon, and even obtain a unique tool called the Roto-Stick, which enhances their in-game photos.

But let’s take a step back and talk about a feature that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet lacked in their photo mode. Trainers can use their trusty Rotom Phones to take pictures and selfies in the games, but it fell a bit short of players’ expectations. While there are emotes that allow trainers to take pictures with each other while on their journey through Paldea, the lack of interaction with the Pokemon themselves was a bit disappointing.

Picture this: a trainer excitedly raising their Rotom Phone to take a selfie with their team of Pokemon, only to have the critters show no reaction whatsoever. It was a missed opportunity for trainers to capture adorable snapshots with their beloved Pokemon, especially when encountering rare and legendary creatures. Alas, it was a let-down for Shiny Hunters and casual fans alike.

But fear not! The upcoming DLC’s Roto-Stick aims to change that. In the trailer, we see a trainer calling her Ninetales, which then poses and looks directly into the camera with the help of the Roto-Stick. Additionally, other players and their Pokemon are seen smiling and posing for the camera, ensuring that players can reliably capture their critters’ best smiles.

This is a game-changer for photo enthusiasts and shiny hunters. No more struggling to get the perfect shot before the critter runs circles around you or takes a nap. While the Roto-Stick brings much-needed improvement, it’s worth mentioning that the critters won’t react to specific poses or emotes from their trainers. But hey, at least we can now get some charming and well-timed shots of our Pokemon in action!

These changes show that Game Freak is actively trying to meet the players’ expectations and improve these features over time. Though the photo mode in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet might still have some limitations, it remains popular and hints at even better things to come in future Pokemon titles. We can look forward to wider angles, more interactive Pokemon, and hopefully, a more comprehensive photo mode in Generation 10.

So, trainers, get ready to capture some amazing moments with your Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, available now for the Nintendo Switch.
