Rebel Moon Zack Snyder’s Game Aesthetic Style Backfires

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Relies Heavily on Style rather than Substance, Drawing Inspiration from Existing Works Rather than Breaking New Ground

Zack Snyder, the director known for his stylized adaptations of popular comics, has released his new film, “Rebel Moon.” Despite high expectations from his fanbase, Snyder’s signature sGameTopicature style may have worked against him in this original project.

Style Over Substance

Snyder’s reputation as a visual filmmaker precedes him. His previous DC films were more focused on reimagining beloved characters rather than crafting gripping stories. This ultimately divided fans and critics, with some loving the dark and edgy style while others found it lacking substance. No longer working with DC, Snyder now has seemingly unlimited funds and creative freedom at Netflix.

Interestingly, despite this freedom, “Rebel Moon” falls flat with its lack of originality. The film openly borrows ideas from various sources, including Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress,” “Seven Samurai,” and even “Star Wars.” It seems like a remix of popular films rather than a fresh and innovative creation.

What is Rebel Moon About?

“Rebel Moon” tells the story of Kora, a former soldier who embarks on a quest across the galaxy to recruit rebel warriors. Their mission? To face the Imperium and protect a farming colony on the moon Veldt. However, the execution of this plot feels lackluster. The characters are forgettable, and the sets and costumes are underwhelming. To make matters worse, the film’s visuals appear cheap and poorly integrated with a dark, smoky green screen backdrop.

What is Rebel Moon’s Rotten Tomatoes Score?

“Rebel Moon” debuted with a meager 9% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, eventually rising to a still disappointing 23%. Critics have largely panned the film, but audience opinions may differ. While Snyder has had success with “Army of the Dead,” which received a 67% rating, it seems that “Rebel Moon” has failed to captivate viewers.

A Boring Blockbuster

“Rebel Moon” opens with an overwhelming amount of exposition, disjointing viewers from the start. Unlike films such as Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” which gradually immerses viewers into its world, “Rebel Moon” feels rushed and lacks a sense of depth. The film jumps between characters and set pieces without giving audiences time to settle in. Unfortunately, this rushed pacing doesn’t bode well for a story intended to span a trilogy.

A Lack of Focus

One of the core issues with “Rebel Moon” is its lack of captivating protagonists. With an excessive number of characters and a rushed plot, there is no character development to anchor the story’s heart. The film tries to compensate for this by assembling an “unlikely band of heroes” with AI-generated names like “Nemesis” and “Darrian Bloodaxe.” However, these characters lack depth, making it challenging for audiences to invest in their journey.

How Rebel Moon Can Fix Itself

If Snyder wants to continue building the “Rebel Moon” universe, he will need to prioritize world-building and character development over style. Audiences are craving a unique and engaging story, rather than drawn-out slow-motion fights and excessive bloodshed. Perhaps the Director’s Cut, already in the works, can address these shortcomings and provide a more satisfying plot.

“Rebel Moon” is currently playing in select theaters and will be streaming on Netflix starting December 21 at 7PM ET. A sequel, “Rebel Moon: The Scargiver,” is also set to be released on the streaming service in April 2024.
