Sea of Thieves: Monkey Island Preview

Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island – A Swashbuckling Adventure!

Are you ready to embark on an epic pirate journey? Sea of Thieves players are in for a treat with the upcoming release of Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island. Prepare to set foot on the legendary island of Melee, full of dastardly pirates, talking skulls, grog, and even rubber chickens with a pulley in the middle! Developer Rare has once again drawn inspiration from pirate lore, combining the beloved Sea of Thieves with the ridiculousness and humor of The Secret of Monkey Island.

For those of you who may not be familiar, The Secret of Monkey Island was an incredibly funny adventure game released in 1990. It was renowned for its bizarre puzzles, memorable writing, and unique comedic situations. Now, Sea of Thieves is taking the helm of the pirate genre, and this combination of old and new promises to be a match made in heaven.

In this multipart Tall Tale, players will join the legendary pirate captain Guybrush Threepwood on his search for the famous Monkey Island. The first installment takes you to Melee Island, the very place where Guybrush’s adventure begins. The best part? You’ll have the freedom to explore the island in all its 3D goodness, something unfathomable back in the 90s. However, keep in mind that there are still some restrictions in place to keep the focus on the current Tall Tale.

When I had the chance to preview The Legend of Monkey Island, I was overwhelmed with nostalgia. Every aspect of the island, from the vibrant characters to the catchy music and stunning scenery, oozes with that classic Monkey Island charm. Rare has done an incredible job blending the two games together, creating an enjoyable mix of old and new. But be warned, exploring Melee Island may become an almost overwhelming experience for Monkey Island fans!

While you won’t be able to roam the entire island freely, there are still plenty of iconic locations to visit. One example is the SCUMM bar, a place that brings a delightful blend of the old and new. And the music! Every strum and gloomy tune will transport you back in time, rekindling that sense of joy you felt when you first played Monkey Island.

Of course, a crossover like this wouldn’t be complete without puzzles. You’ll encounter a mix of familiar and Sea of Thieves-inspired puzzles that might take a bit longer to solve than anticipated. Some may find the back-and-forth trekking a bit tedious, but the straightforward nature of these puzzles ensures that players of all skill levels can enjoy them. And hey, who doesn’t love a good insert item puzzle?

Now, let’s talk about the dialogue. The game’s new script, based on the original Monkey Island, does a fantastic job of capturing the essence and energy of the older titles. Although there may be some differences compared to the legendary story it draws from, the dialogue remains witty and engaging. Just be prepared to encounter a few new characters who might feel a little out of place in their surroundings. The mix of old and new can be a tricky balancing act, especially when fans have such fond memories of the original game.

Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island has the potential to be something truly grand. With each new installment, the overwhelming nostalgia will continue to grow, leaving players yearning for a fully 3D Monkey Island game (come on, we all want it!). Rare has poured their hearts into recreating an engaging and enjoyable atmosphere, seamlessly blending old and new elements. This Tall Tale may not be their most ambitious project, but it has the potential to be the most beloved among fans.

So mark your calendars, mateys! Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island sets sail on July 20 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
