Sega Saturn: A Mini Console Dream?

Sega Saturn and Dreamcast

Ah, the Sega Saturn, that iconic console from the past that we all know and (maybe) love. Recently, there have been talks about the possibility of Sega developing a miniature version of this classic machine. You know, one of those tiny consoles filled with retro games that everyone’s been crazy about? Yeah, just like Nintendo did with their NES and SNES mini consoles.

But hold your horses, folks! Before we get too excited, let’s dive into the details. It turns out that Sega released its own retro mini consoles called the Sega Genesis Mini, which came in two waves. The first wave had 42 nostalgic games, and the second wave even included titles from the Sega CD library. Way to go, Sega!

After the release of these mini consoles in 2022, Sega decided to reach out to fans and asked them which mini console they’d like to see next. As part of an online questionnaire included with each purchase, the possibility of a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast mini console was raised. Now, let’s face it, these two consoles are truly iconic and have a special place in our gaming hearts.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (thanks to VGC for the translation), the current Sega president, Yukio Sugino, shed some light on the challenges of creating a Sega Saturn mini console. Apparently, the main issue lies in the hardware itself. You see, the Sega Saturn was a high-performance machine back in the day, even surpassing the mighty PS1 in raw power. However, it had a complex hardware structure that’s not easy to replicate in a mini-sized version.

But fear not, dear gamers! Sugino mentioned that Sega would consider the idea once they are in a position to openly develop it with the help of fans who adored the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. So, there’s still hope for a mini console that can bring back all those nostalgic memories!

Now, before we get too carried away, let’s take a step back and look at the reality of the situation. Yosuke Okunari, the producer of Sega’s classic hardware, acknowledged the fans’ desire for a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast mini console back in 2022. However, he also mentioned that the costs of producing these miniature versions would be sky-high. Recreating and miniaturizing the complicated hardware for production is a pricey endeavor, and the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t exactly helped in reducing those costs.

We can’t overlook the fact that the Sega Saturn had some hidden gems in its library. Games like the highly acclaimed Panzer Dragoon Saga, for example, have been stuck on the original console and haven’t received a re-release. Such a shame!

So, for now, we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that one day we’ll see a Sega Saturn mini console in all its glory. Until then, let’s cherish the memories and hold on tight to our retro consoles. After all, they’re the ones that started it all!
