Sonic the Hedgehog: Saying Goodbye to Pixel Art, But Still Nurturing Nostalgia

Oh, pixel art, you adorable little thing. You’ve been around since the dawn of gaming, bringing a certain charm that even the most realistic graphics can’t match. But according to Takashi Iizuki, the developer for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, pixel art might not have a long-term future in the video game industry. Don’t panic just yet though, because there’s still a lot of love for those retro vibes.
The classic Sonic the Hedgehog series started out as a 2D side-scroller with pixel art, and it will always have a special place in our gaming hearts. Even as Sonic continues to evolve with fancy new gameplay mechanics and stunning designs, it’s nice to know that the upcoming Sonic Superstars will pay homage to its pixelated roots. It’s like the franchise saying, “Hey, we haven’t forgotten where we started!”
In a recent interview with GameTopic+, Iizuki admitted that while he loves the classic aesthetic, pixel art won’t be the driving force behind Sonic games in the future. Sonic Superstars, with its mix of 2D nostalgia and fresh twists, is just the beginning of a transition away from pixelated designs. It’s time to wave goodbye to 2D pixels and welcome something new.
But fear not, Sonic fans! Iizuki has made it clear that the future lies in Sonic Frontiers, an open-world adventure that will shape the series for the next 10–20 years. This division between modern Sonic and classic Sonic is like a double-edged sword, offering both the thrill of new experiences and the warm embrace of nostalgia. It’s the best of both worlds!
Earlier this summer, Sonic Frontiers received an update, proving that Sonic Team is committed to improving and expanding upon the game. And while we may have to bid farewell to pixel art, there are still plenty of games out there that celebrate the old-school aesthetics. Sonic Superstars will bridge the gap, offering a taste of the classic gameplay and design while moving forward in a new direction. We can’t wait to see what it has in store for us!
