Sonic Superstars: Taking Sonic to New Heights
Sonic the Hedgehog is back with a bang in the upcoming 2D adventure, Sonic Superstars! Developed by Sega and Sonic Team, this game is shaping up to be the best-looking installment in the franchise yet. While it retains the classic Sonic physics we all know and love, it also introduces some exciting new features to keep things fresh.
In Sonic Superstars, you’ll be able to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. Each character brings their own unique strengths and abilities to the table. Sonic can perform the formidable drop dash, Tails and Knuckles can hover and float for easier platforming, and Amy Rose can unleash her colorful mallet and double jump her way to victory!
But that’s not all – Sonic and his friends can now tap into the power of Emerald Powers. These power-ups resemble the gameplay of Sonic Colors, allowing players to create clones, swim up waterfalls, and even gain X-ray vision to uncover hidden stage elements. With an intuitive radial menu, selecting and utilizing these powers has never been easier.
Co-op play is also a key feature of Sonic Superstars. You can team up with up to three friends and race through the levels together. However, be prepared for a wild ride, as the relentless speed of Sonic’s gameplay can cause even the most seasoned players to leave their allies behind. So, if you plan on playing with a less experienced partner or your kids, it might be best to slow things down a bit to avoid any frustration.
Sonic Superstars pays homage to the classic Sonic levels we know and love. From the lush Green Hill-like Bridge Island Zone, to the Casino Night Zone-inspired Pinball Carnival, each level brims with nostalgia. However, the standout level has to be Cyber Station Zone, where Team Sonic can transform into voxelized versions of themselves or even into entirely new creatures like mice, squids, and rocket ships. This level introduces an exciting twist to the gameplay and adds a refreshing change of pace.
One thing that cannot be overlooked is just how stunning Sonic Superstars looks. The art style perfectly balances the timeless charm of classic Sonic with a modern touch. Whether it’s Sonic, Eggman, or the returning bad guy Fang the Sniper, every character is beautifully rendered and lit, capturing the essence of their iconic designs. Additionally, a new character called Trip, a clumsy and heavily armored creature, makes her debut. Her mysterious purpose and potential change of heart will undoubtedly make the story even more intriguing.
Mark your calendars! Sonic Superstars will be leaping onto all major gaming platforms on October 17th, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. No matter your platform of choice, get ready for a whirlwind adventure with Sonic and his friends.
