Eric Lempel, the Senior Vice President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, couldn’t help but gush over the success, saying, “On behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment, I want to say thank you to the fans – we truly hope you are enjoying your time playing as Peter and Miles in this amazing adventure.”
Now, let’s dive into the numbers. Of course, it’s tough to make precise comparisons since game publishers only share sales figures when they want to boast. They love throwing in asterisks and qualifiers like confetti at a parade. In this case, the asterisk in Monday’s news release states that the total sales include pre-orders and copies bundled with a PlayStation 5 console. But hey, let’s not take away from Spidey’s triumph!
Last year, Sony gave this same honor to God of War Ragnarök, which boasted sales of 5.1 million copies in its first week. However, Sony didn’t announce that achievement until a couple of weeks after the game hit the market. Who knows, with Spider-Man 2’s lightning-speed start, it might surpass that mark by the end of this week. Only time will tell!
Speaking of records, let’s not forget about The Last of Us Part 2, which sold a staggering 4 million units in just three days during its release on the PlayStation 4. Considered the “fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever,” it’s the one to beat. And if you want more qualifiers, Sony also touted Ghost of Tsushima as the fastest-selling “first-party original IP debut” in PS4 history with a three-day total of 2.4 million copies.
