The Day Before Accused of Copying Other Games, Again
Welcome to the post-apocalyptic playground of The Day Before! It seems this highly anticipated and somewhat scandalous open world MMO has once again found itself in hot water. Accusations are flying that the game has shamelessly borrowed from other popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
One brave soul, YouTube user Randomly, took it upon themselves to upload a video that compares The Day Before’s Official Gameplay Overview and Release Date Trailer (just released yesterday, mind you) with the official trailers of these iconic open-world games. And what do you know? There are striking similarities not only in visuals but also in the voiceover!
Now, let’s not get too hung up on the visuals, because this time around, it’s all about the voiceover. It seems that The Day Before’s trailer has a few lines that sound suspiciously like they were snatched from the mouths of other trailers. I kid you not! They even share phrases word for word!
For example, in The Day Before’s trailer, they proudly declare, “Welcome to the next generation of post-apocalyptic MMO open-world survival games like never before. Immerse yourself in The Day Before.” But hold your horses! Cyberpunk 2077’s Official Gameplay Trailer, published on November 19, 2020, said, “Welcome to the next-generation of open-world adventure. Immerse yourself in Cyberpunk 2077.” That’s…interesting, to say the least!
If that’s not eyebrow-raising enough, let’s talk about weapons, baby! The Day Before boasts, “…to ensure that combat remains deep and engaging at all times. Each weapon boasts unique characteristics, as well as realistic reload and recoil mechanics.” Hmmm, sounds familiar? Ah yes, Red Dead Redemption 2’s Official Gameplay Video, published on August 9, 2018, declared, “…to make combat deep and engaging at all times. Each weapon has unique characteristics, with realistic reload and recoil.”

Naturally, GameTopic, our trusty investigator, has reached out to The Day Before developer Fntastic, as well as the masterminds behind Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games, for their thoughts on the matter. Fntastic is staying mum, while Rockstar Games plans to release a statement at some point, and the folks at CD Projekt Red, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, have decided to keep their lips sealed.
But wait, there’s more! This isn’t the first time The Day Before has found itself embroiled in copying accusations. A few scenes from a gameplay trailer released back in February 2023 looked eerily similar to some fans, and Reddit user PatFury even went to the trouble of aligning the opening shots of The Day Before’s trailer with a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer from September 30, 2020. And guess what? They matched up quite nicely!
Now, PatFury’s comparison doesn’t stop there. They’ve also noticed some other interesting “coincidences” between The Day Before and other games. We’re talking fonts that resemble The Last of Us’ font, a screenshot that mirrors The Division, and more! This is getting juicier than the latest in-game drama!
Fntastic, feeling the heat of scrutiny, decided to address these accusations head-on. They took to Twitter and released a statement that bemoaned the dangers of disinformation. Apparently, in this age of misinformation, anyone can say anything for views, and people will lap it up like hungry kittens. Fntastic pleads for proper fact-checking and warns of the impact such disinformation can have on indie and small/medium studios. Wise words indeed!
As if this wasn’t enough drama for one game, The Day Before has also had its fair share of controversy throughout its development period. Rumors of scamming, multiple delays, the use of unpaid workers, miscommunications, and more have plagued the game. It’s safe to say that it has quite the troubled history.
But fear not, brave gamers! The latest trailer brings a glimmer of hope. The Day Before has been delayed for the third time, but fear not, Early Access is coming to save the day on December 7, 2023! Brace yourselves for an early taste of what this game has to offer.
Alright, folks, that’s the scoop on The Day Before and all its chaotic copying accusations. If you want to dive deeper into this strange saga, you can check out the full story here.
