The Great Spider-Man 2 Dilemma

You know, sometimes you just gotta ask some follow-up questions, especially when it comes to the world of Spider-Man. You won’t believe the confusion I found myself in recently while listening to a podcast. One of the hosts mentioned “the second Spider-Man,” and my mind started spinning webs of uncertainty. Which Spider-Man were they referring to? Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game for PlayStation 5? Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 from 2004? Maybe even Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from 2014? As the podcast went on, I finally realized they were actually talking about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), the second installment in the animated Spider-Verse movie series.
But let’s be real here, folks. This whole situation with too many Spider-Mans 2 is just bananas! Spider-Man 2s, Spiders-Man, Spider-Men… it’s all too much for my friendly neighborhood brain to handle.
Now, I wish I had a genius plan to fix this Spider-Man overload, but unfortunately, it’s a web that keeps on growing. Just the other day, there was even a Spider-Man 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Sounds exciting, right? Well, hold your horses because it was actually about the PS5 video game. Can you blame anyone for assuming it had something to do with Across the Spider-Verse or the Marvel Cinematic Universe? I mean, the Hollywood writers and actors are currently on strike, so they couldn’t even be at SDCC to clear things up.
To make matters worse, let’s not forget about the game tie-ins for the previous Spider-Man movies. We had Spider-Man 2 (2004) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) video games, both conveniently named after their respective films. And let’s not overlook the classic Spider-Man 2 games like the Game Boy Color version, Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six (2001), or its PlayStation counterpart, Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. It’s like a never-ending spin-off of Spider-Man titles from different universes! The Game Boy game even had the audacity to be the first-ever “Spider-Man 2,” if you don’t count the comic book issues (but hey, at least those are properly labeled).

I don’t know about you, but this whole situation seems pretty goofy to me. In an era of reboots and sequels for characters created decades ago, the Spider-Man 2 confusion takes the cake. While we’re all desperately waiting for a solution to this web-slinging problem, I suggest we default to assuming that “Spider-Man 2” refers to the iconic Game Boy Color game from 2001, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
So, fellow gamers and Spidey enthusiasts, let’s navigate this tangled web of confusion together and keep our sense of humor intact. After all, with great power comes great entertainment… or something like that!
