Why Venba Stands Out among Cooking Games
Venba: A Cooking Game With Heart and a Poignant Narrative

Venba is not your typical cooking game. Sure, it involves assembling dishes, but it goes beyond that. Developed by Visai Studios, this indie title immerses players in the captivating narrative of an immigrant family living in Canada. It delves into the complexities of culture, family dynamics, and the profound connections we forge through food. Venba will be hitting Game Pass, PC, PlayStation, and Switch on July 31, so get ready to embark on a culinary journey like no other.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Abhi, the talented writer and designer behind Venba, to uncover what sets this game apart from the sea of cooking games out there. Spoiler alert: it’s the heartwarming storytelling that steals the show.

Breaking the Mold of Cooking Games
Let’s be honest, cooking games are a dime a dozen. Just a simple search on Google floods your screen with countless options, making it hard to tell them apart. Most of these games follow the same formula: cook dishes against the clock or face the consequences. However, Venba dares to be different. Abandoning the cliched timed gameplay, it shifts its focus to a narrative-driven experience. Cooking becomes the means of communication, resilience, and preservation of culture in the face of adversity.
Abhi explains, “We wanted to approach the cooking in a different way than how most cooking games have done it so far. Given that the themes of the game deal with culture and the importance of holding on to it, a damaged recipe book that players can only partially read from made a lot of sense.”
In Venba, you’ll take on the role of the mother, using her collection of old, damaged recipes as your guide. Throughout the game, you’ll have the pleasure of whipping up ten mouthwatering South Indian dishes, each one a testament to the cherished memories Abhi holds dear. With each restored recipe, you’ll not only enjoy a tantalizing meal but also witness the intricate details of the cooking process brought to life. Expect to experience the sizzle of water on a hot dosa pan or the enticing aroma of perfectly cooked biryani.

A Wholesome Exploration of Culture and Community
Venba not only masters the art of storytelling but also explores culture in a unique and genuine manner. Ingredients play a crucial role, allowing players to understand the evolution of immigrant communities over time. The game begins in the 1980s and progresses all the way to the late 2010s, reflecting the growing availability of ingredients as the community flourishes in Canada.
Abhi elaborates, “Since Venba starts in the 1980s and goes all the way to the late 2010s, the ingredients the players would have had access to would grow dramatically, paralleling the growth of immigrant communities here.”
This attention to detail showcases how community can shape and enrich culture, both locally and traditionally. By immersing yourself in Venba’s world, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of food and the unbreakable bonds it fosters.
A Collaborative Journey with Microsoft
Venba’s release on Game Pass is a testament to the dedicated partnership between Visai Studios and Microsoft. Through this collaboration, Abhi and the team were able to fully realize their vision and create a narrative cooking game that stands out in the market. Prepare to be captivated by a genuine tale of food’s influence on family, culture, love, loss, and more.
Mark your calendars, because Venba will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on July 31. Get ready to embark on an unforgettable culinary adventure that will warm your heart and tickle your taste buds.
