Sotetsu implores Yuffie to help him in FF7 Rebirth

First available after the main events in Chapter 9, ‘Teach Me, O Great Warrior’ is a side quest starring our resident plucky ninja, Yuffie Kisaragi. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gives Yuffie heaps more material than she had in the original game, and in this instance, she gets to show off all those nifty Wutaian skills of hers.

Completing the mission objectives to the game’s satisfaction can be a bit tough if you’re not prepared, and the last skirmish before the quest’s completion can be challenging, no matter how you slice it. Let’s teach Sotetsu what it takes to honor his idol!

How To Begin ‘Teach Me, Great Warrior’

After you’ve completed the story events at the Gongaga Reactor, the ‘Teach Me, Great Warrior’ side quest becomes available. It will remain available for the remainder of the game, excluding times when fast travel is locked.

Head to the Community Board in Gongaga, which is situated beside the pub. (You can always consult your map, too!) Accept the gig, and you will find the client, Sotetsu, shouting just past the South Gate exit.

We had a bit of a weirdly difficult time figuring out how to get to the guy at first, which might well have just been us being tired at the time. But if you do get turned around, the ‘trick’ is to hike up the ledge around the center portion of the area.

Sotetsu implores Yuffie to help him train. She’s all too giddy to do so, of course. Sotetsu will then run off to the first training spot, so follow suit when you’re ready.

The First Three Lessons

Master Yuffie’s first lesson in Teach Me, Great Warrior in FF7 Rebirth

Each of the first three out of four lessons is relatively easy, though we got a bit stuck with the second one. Let’s knock them out one by one here.

Lesson Requirements Tips
First – Stagger an enemy
– Let Sotetsu attack three times
– Keep Sotetsu from falling in battle
– Hang back until Sotetsu’s gotten his hits in.
– Stagger a foe by pressuring with Fire, completing the second objective.
– Sotetsu won’t have much trouble here, at least not in our experience.
Second – Pressure two enemies
– Stagger an enemy
– Keep Sotetsu from falling in battle
– Pressure two enemies with Ice, which’ll do the trick.
– Staggering can actually be tough because, well, our damage output was too high. Use elemental abilities to slow the slaying.
– Sotetsu might have a tad more difficulty here, so make sure you’ve got your finger on the potions pulse.
Third – Stagger two enemies
– Two-minute time limit
– Keep Sotetsu from falling in battle
– Stagger the foes with Focused Thrust and some Fire magic where applicable.
– When the Grandhorns block, you can pressure them more easily.
– The time limit is quite generous, even if it doesn’t appear as such at first.
– Those Grandhorns can put the hurt on Sotetsu before long. Be prepared to heal him up.

The Fourth and Final Lesson

The last lesson pits you against a pair of Mastodons, rarer and more powerful variants of the Gongaga region’s spin on those Elphadunks you saw in the Grasslands.

Keeping Sotetsu from falling unconscious is the only requirement here, but staying alive yourself (while healing Sotetsu as needed) can be a challenge if you don’t come in with full HP and a party that can dole out Fire-elemental damage.

That’s the trick to it, really; Fira (or Firaga if you have it) will stifle the Mastodons over time, pressuring and eventually staggering them. But they will trample across the battlefield with alarming ferocity, so keep careful tabs on your party’s vigor.

Mist Mega-Potions and Cura/Curaga with Magnify are a godsend here, as is Pray if you have a character who can commit two ATB charges to a heal-all.

‘Teach Me, Great Warrior’ Side Quest Rewards

Cissnei offers to teach Sotetsu in FF7 Rebirth

When the dust settles, we’ll learn more about why Sotetsu’s been so tough on himself. We’ll also get a funny scene with a nice Cissnei moment, which we’re listing like it’s a serious reward here, just in case you like her as much as we do.

But more pragmatically, you will receive:

  • Secrets of the Ninja, Vol. IV Manuscript for Yuffie
  • Yuffie Affection Points
  • EXP and Party EXP
  • Gil

Well, there you have it, adventurers! Yuffie’s ‘Teach Me, Great Warrior’ side quest is one worth taking on, not only for the rewards but also for the fun and challenging battles along the way. Remember to prepare yourself and don’t be afraid to use different strategies to overcome each lesson. And as always, keep on gaming! 😄
