Our Latest Gaming Adventures

Hello! Welcome back to our recurring segment where we share snippets about the games we've been playing.

What We’ve Been Playing: A Mix of Adventures and Nostalgia

Hey there! Welcome back to our regular feature where we delve into the games that have captured our attention recently. This edition marks the last “What We’ve Been Playing” of the year 2023, so get ready for some thrilling adventures and nostalgic throwbacks. When we return in January, we’ll have plenty to share about the games we played (or didn’t manage to play) during the end-of-year break. Exciting stuff, right? So without further ado, let’s jump into our gaming escapades!

But before we begin, if you want to catch up on our previous editions of “What We’ve Been Playing,” check out our archive here.

Recently, I embarked on a heartwarming gaming journey with my son in the whimsical world of Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch. Something magical happened – even though we haven’t progressed very far in the game (we just rescued BowWow from the Moblin Cave and are on our way to the Bottle Grotto), it ignited a flame of imagination in my son.

One evening, after we completed our first dungeon, I told my son it was time for bed. But when I walked into his room to check on him, I found him huddled over his desk, meticulously sketching Koholint Island in vibrant detail. The sight filled me with joy!

What amazed me the most was that he had also started mapping areas we hadn’t even reached yet, based solely on his own thoughts and ideas about what might lie ahead. Surprisingly, his guesses weren’t far off. He had drawn a castle to the far east, a vast desert area, and even another town-like settlement beyond Mabe Village. Little does he know, there’s still plenty more to discover, like the mysterious Animal Village. I’m keeping mum about it, though, as I want it to be a delightful surprise as we progress together.

With the Christmas holidays upon us, I can’t think of a better way to spend quality time with my son than snuggled up on the sofa with mugs of hot chocolate, wrapped in cozy blankets, embarking on another adventure through the enchanting world of Koholint Island. ’Tis the season, after all!

🌌 A Space for the Unbound – Indonesian Perspectives Unveiled

I’m thrilled to see Toge Productions, the Indonesian game studio behind hits like Coffee Talk (1 and 2), making waves in the industry. Their latest creation, A Space for the Unbound, shines a light on Indonesian perspectives and offers players a unique experience.

The game beautifully portrays the lives of Indonesian teenagers, capturing their struggles, joys, and the everyday happenings of school life. At its core, it’s a coming-of-age tale with a captivating storyline that unfolds as you delve deeper into the game.

What struck me most about A Space for the Unbound is how it effortlessly immerses players in a virtual tourism experience. It’s not just the sun-drenched locations you explore that transport you to Indonesia, but also the underlying attitudes and cultural nuances of the people. It’s all seamlessly interwoven into the game, providing players with an authentic glimpse into Indonesian life.

Playing this game made me ponder the power of gaming to bridge the gap between different cultures and worlds. A simple thing for the developers, but it distinguishes A Space for the Unbound in my eyes. I find myself daydreaming about the idyllic setting portrayed in the game, longing for its warmth and whimsy, especially as I look out my rainy office window. Oh, how I wish I could be there right now!

❄️ Lake: Season’s Greetings – A Cozy Christmas DLC

If you were captivated by the heartwarming narrative of Lake, the game that beautifully combines small-town drama with the meditative joy of being a postie, then you’re in for a treat with its recently-released Christmas DLC, Season’s Greetings.

Acting as a prequel, this add-on allows you to step into the shoes of Merdith’s dad, Thomas Weiss, roughly six months before the main game’s events take place. Set during the Christmas holiday season, you’ll find yourself delivering parcels while unraveling a story that sets the stage for what unfolds next, complete with fresh subplots.

Thomas, a seasoned postman, is content in his cozy small-town world but is starting to question if there’s more to life than his beloved job as retirement approaches. Meanwhile, Lake’s protagonist, Meredith, is stuck in the city, unable to make it back home in time for Christmas.

Season’s Greetings continues the tradition of storytelling through interactions with the charming community of Providence Oaks. As you go about your parcel delivery duties and engage in local happenings, you’ll find yourself getting entangled in heartwarming tales. Whether it’s playing matchmaker for love-struck visitors, navigating shopkeeper rivalries, or teaming up with sympathetic colleagues to outsmart a malicious manager, there’s no shortage of gentle, yet captivating, narratives to enjoy.

That’s the beauty of Lake as a video game—a serene journey with echoes of Crazy Taxi, but with a cozy twist—a “Cosy Taxi,” if you will.
