Aveum's Nocea: A Missed Opportunity for Immortals

Immortals of Aveum’s Nocea Mission: A Missed Magical Opportunity

Sandrakk and The Hand

With its explosive action and fantastical storyline, Ascendant Studios’ enchanting shooter Immortals of Aveum draws inspiration from the FPS genre. Picture a mash-up of Call of Duty and Doctor Strange filled with over-the-top set-piece sequences that will keep you on the edge of your gaming chair. However, amidst all the adrenaline-fueled action, the Nocea mission in Immortals of Aveum stands out as strangely subdued.

Taking place just before the game’s halfway point, the Nocea mission moves the story forward in important ways but fails to deliver the epic action players may expect. As players unlock a wider array of Triarch Magus Jak’s magical abilities, they anticipate a grand confrontation with the primary antagonist, Sandrakk. Unfortunately, Nocea presents players with a mission that not only feels out of place narratively, but also squanders the opportunity for a truly epic set-piece sequence.

The Nocea mission occurs immediately after players navigate the Pale Forest mission. At this point in the game, it is revealed that Sandrakk, now more powerful after absorbing a magical leyline, was once a member of the Order of the Immortals, serving alongside General Kirkan. In a surprising turn of events, Kirkan, usually calm and calculating, devises a plan to ambush Sandrakk during a meeting meant for the order’s surrender.

While Kirkan’s plan to take down Sandrakk with a small number of soldiers may seem ill-advised, it sets the stage for what should have been a thrilling yet reckless mission. However, instead of engaging in an action-packed battle against Sandrakk and the Order of the Masks, players are treated to a brief cutscene where Jak is swiftly incapacitated by falling debris. Opting for a cinematic to resolve the conflict is a disappointing choice in an otherwise action-packed game and disregards the potential for an engaging and thrilling action sequence.

An Unwinnable Battle and Extraordinary Set Piece Potential

In the world of Immortals of Aveum, the Nocea mission is where the primary players finally face one another, only to brush past the conflict with a cutscene. While victory was never a certainty for the Immortals, allowing players to confront the villain’s forces before succumbing to overwhelming odds would have created a riveting and memorable experience.

Imagine a magical firefight in Nocea as Sandrakk systematically tore the ancient city apart piece by piece around players. Hours of mastering Jak’s abilities would have culminated in a breathtaking battle against impossible odds. Failing to overcome the overwhelming forces in Nocea would have served as a catalyst, motivating players to fight even harder in the second half of the story. Unfortunately, the choice to resolve the conflict through a cutscene prevents players from taking part in what could have been an extraordinary set-piece sequence.

A Magical Miss in Immortals of Aveum

Ascendant Studios’ Immortals of Aveum offers a plethora of high-octane action throughout its runtime, making the Nocea mission feel disconnected in comparison. By presenting players with a mission that feels out of place in the overall story and then wrapping it up with a cutscene, the game misses the opportunity to deliver something truly magical.

Immortals of Aveum is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
