Star Wars – Embracing the Gray Jedi
In the epic battle between the Light and Dark Sides of the Force, the Jedi and Sith have always taken center stage. But what about those who fall somewhere in-between? Enter the Gray Jedi, the rebels of the Force alignment world.
- The Jensaarai

The Jensaarai, also known as the Followers of the Hidden Truth, were a group founded by a Jedi Knight who discovered an ancient Sith tome. Realizing that the Jedi had stolen Sith teachings, this Jedi Knight couldn’t trust the Light but wasn’t swayed by the Dark either. So, they created a neutral order, incorporating teachings from both sides.
The Jensaarai mastered the Dark Side of the Force without succumbing to its corruption. They achieved a true balance, defying the Jedi prophecy.
- Jal Shey

The Jal Shey were an intriguing group of Force-sensitive individuals who rejected the extremes of the Light and Dark Sides. Unlike the Jensaarai, the Jal Shey pursued a more intellectual understanding of the Force. Their focus was on studying and unlocking the secrets of the Force, all while opposing war and violence.
While many Jal Shey took up roles as scholars and diplomats, they also learned basic self-defense skills. Their ultimate goal was to maintain balance in all things.

- Cade Skywalker

Descended from the legendary Skywalker lineage, Cade Skywalker found himself caught up in the new Galactic Civil War. Initially trained as a Jedi, he later became a smuggler, bounty hunter, and pirate. Though he possessed great talent in the Force, Cade had a rebellious streak and was known to tiptoe along the Dark Side.
But here’s the twist: Cade never succumbed to the corrupting allure of the Dark Side. In fact, he used its temptation to strengthen himself. With his natural inclination towards the Gray, Cade effortlessly straddled the line between Light and Dark, cementing his place as one of the most powerful Gray Jedi.
- Asajj Ventress

You may be surprised to find Ventress, a character introduced as a villain, on this list. But not all Gray Jedi are redeemed Lightsiders seeking balance. Some, like Ventress, are former Sith in search of their own equilibrium.
After surviving the Clone Wars, Ventress lost her purpose when the Nightsisters were destroyed. Joining forces with Quinlan Vos, she aimed to take down Count Dooku. But the temptations of the Dark Side lurked ever closer for Vos. In a selfless act, Ventress sacrificed herself to ensure Vos wouldn’t fall into the same darkness she once did.
- Quinlan Vos

Speaking of Quinlan Vos, he started as a Jedi who got tangled up in a dangerous mission that led him down a treacherous path. Sent undercover to infiltrate the Dark Side, he was tasked with killing Darth Sidious. Along the way, Vos committed numerous atrocities, finding himself seduced by the very darkness he sought to destroy.
However, thanks to Ventress’s sacrifice, Vos veered away from the Dark Side. While he couldn’t quite find his way back to the pure Light, he achieved a harmonious coexistence, making him a quintessential Gray Jedi. But don’t worry, he was mostly on the side of good.
- Kreia

Kreia, perhaps one of the most complex characters in Star Wars, embodies the essence of a Gray Jedi. What sets her apart is being cast out by both the Jedi and Sith, rather than choosing to leave on her own volition. She went from being Revan’s instructor to being exiled from the Jedi Order due to Revan’s involvement in the Mandalorian Wars. Later, she joined a Sith triumvirate only to be betrayed once again.
Kreia possessed a unique perspective on the Force, viewing it as a crutch for the weak, be it Jedi or Sith. She had a mission to help the galaxy but believed compassion made individuals vulnerable. With such complexities, Kreia stands out as one of the most intriguing Gray Jedi.
- Revan

Revan, the Jedi padawan of Kreia, followed a path to become a Gray Jedi during the days of the Old Republic. When the Jedi Council hesitated to fight the Mandalorian invaders, Revan defied their orders and engaged in battle. This decision led him down the path of the Gray Jedi, mastering skills from both the Light and Dark Sides of the Force.
Unfortunately, Revan and his apprentice, Malak, succumbed to the allure of the Dark Side. This led to Revan’s fall and his master’s expulsion from the Council. Eventually, Revan returned to the Light Side and sought to eradicate the Sith, but for a brief period, he exemplified the essence of a Gray Jedi.
- Kanan Jarrus

While not officially recognized as a Gray Jedi, Kanan Jarrus’s journey reflects the essence of those who walk the gray path. Kanan held immense respect and love for the Jedi and their Order but was forcibly torn away when his master was killed during Order 66. Thanks to the intervention of the Bad Batch, Kanan was able to escape.
As a Jedi Master to Ezra Bridger, Kanan remained true to the Jedi Code as much as he could. However, he often strayed from traditional teachings and formed deep emotional bonds. Kanan carved his own spiritual path, finding purpose in his unique approach. He embraced his emotions instead of suppressing them, making him a crucial figure in the early days of the Rebellion and the fearless crew of the Ghost.
- Ezra Bridger

Following in the footsteps of his master, Ezra Bridger fully embraced the ways of the Gray Jedi. Discovered on Lothal, Ezra’s Force-sensitive abilities captured the attention of Kanan and his crew on the Ghost. Ezra became Kanan’s apprentice and absorbed his master’s Gray Jedi philosophy.
Although Ezra flirted with the Dark Side, especially under the influence of Darth Maul, he always managed to find his way back to the Light. Ezra, fueled by his emotions, occasionally unleashed his fury on opponents, defying the strict teachings of the Light side. His journey as a Gray Jedi was intricately woven into his story.
- Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano, a true embodiment of the Jedi principles despite her disillusionment with the Jedi Order, stands as the pinnacle of Gray Jedi ideals. After being framed for the Jedi Temple bombing, she severed her ties with the order, declaring herself “no Jedi.” Even after her name was cleared, her faith remained shaken, leading her to strike her own path.
Nonetheless, Ahsoka continued her mission to bring goodness to the galaxy. She remained impervious to the allure of the Dark Side, despite grappling with her emotions and attachments. Embracing a unique approach, Ahsoka wielded white lightsabers and aided anyone in need, particularly the early Rebellion crew of the Ghost. Her predominance in employing the Light Side, while embracing elements of the Dark, solidifies her as the ultimate Gray Jedi.
Star Wars is a galaxy teeming with fascinating characters, and these Gray Jedi add a whole new layer of complexity. Their ability to balance on the tightrope between Light and Dark makes their journeys all the more intriguing. May the Force be with them, always.
