The Devil in Me: How to Unlock the 'Can You Pet the Dog?' Trophy/Achievement

The Doggo Dilemma in The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me

image Having a pet can be one of the most harrowing situations in horror media, especially in The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me that gives quite a chilling take on the slasher formula. Set in the universe of The Dark Pictures Anthology, this Supermassive Games IP takes the small film crew of Lonnit Entertainment to a replica of H.H. Holmes’ infamous “Murder Castle,” where their invitation to shoot for their documentary becomes a fight for their lives.

Throughout The Devil In Me, protagonist Kate Wilder and her friends’ struggle for survival are encounters that eventually determine their fate, but the playable cast of five aren’t the only ones whose survival depends on the player. At some point, players encounter a dog named Connie and, depending on their actions, may bring the dog to safety or her eventual doom. If they keep her safe, they earn the Can You Pet The Dog? Achievement.

Warning: This guide contains spoilers, so players should proceed with caution.

The Tale of Connie

image As players make progress through The Devil In Me, they will soon learn that the person who invited them to the Murder Castle replica, Granthem Du’Met, is actually Joseph Morello. He is a true crime author whose interest in H.H. Holmes had him bring his family to the hotel replica upon Du’Met’s invitation.

When the real Granthem Du’Met starts killing his wife and children, the murderer agrees to spare his youngest, Bethany, in exchange for Joseph pretending to be him and luring the next set of victims, this time Kate and company, to the island. This is hinted early on when Joseph and Bethany book it to the ferry as soon as the protagonists arrived at the location.

What they didn’t know back then was that they left someone behind – Connie, the family dog. He is an American Staffordshire Terrier with a rather friendly demeanor but feisty and alert in Du’Met’s presence. While players eventually discover Connie’s true history, his aggression towards the masked man already hinted at the unfortunate fate of his previous owners.

Meeting Connie

Before players even encounter Connie, his existence throughout a player’s The Devil In Me experience is already hinted at across the game. In the interactive drama, certain situations can reveal items and snippets that hint at the existence of a dog somewhere on the island. For instance, the Morellos’ chapter can have players encounter Connie’s Bowl, updating the Mysterious Creature bearing.

image However, Connie makes his first full appearance during Cliffside. This chapter originally has Charlie and Mark make their way to the lighthouse, although they are beset by dangers in the form of unstable beams that make it difficult to navigate the area. The beam balancing QTE (Quick Time Events) is originally played by Charlie if he survives GameTopicition.

However, a more effective route here is to kill Charlie during that previous chapter, so only Mark has to play through the QTE. After this challenge, Mark encounters Connie. Players should not throw the rock and instead do nothing, prompting him to pet him. This is relevant to Connie’s survival.

Connie’s Fate

The player’s major encounter with Connie in the interactive drama happens during Homestead, the chapter where Kate and Jamie manage to run to a barn while Du’Met chases after them. They see Connie and manage to have a small interaction before the dog starts to bark aggressively at the approaching Du’Met.

Players need to make a choice here, whether to kill Connie to stop Du’Met from noticing them or risk the killer finding where they are. Here’s what each option entails and what it means for both Connie and the rest of the protagonists:

  • Kill Connie: The worst decision among the choices, killing Connie will cease the noise and Du’Met won’t find the players. In the Curator’s recap, even he is surprised that players somehow got the dog killed as they made progress in the story.
  • Not do anything, Ask Kate to join: If players don’t do anything or ask Kate to accompany them, Du’Met finds them and kills Jamie. Kate is then prompted with yet another choice of whether to kill Connie or to let him go.
  • Ask Kate for help: This is the most ideal option. When chosen, Kate takes Connie and hides elsewhere to try and calm the dog down. While this doesn’t work the way they planned, all three characters have a chance of surviving the encounter with Du’Met.

Petting the Pooch

image Despite the debut in Cliffside and fate determined at Homestead, Connie also appears in The Devil In Me during Lake, particularly after Du’Met kills the police officer and the party makes a mad dash to a vacant speedboat. Here are the conditions in the interactive drama game to ensure Connie makes an appearance here:

  • If Connie survives the encounter with Kate and Jamie, then she finds her way to the docks during Lake’s events.
  • If Mark survives and pets Connie earlier, he has the option to call him. Recognizing the kind man who petted him, Connie will run towards the group in the speedboat.

Ensuring Connie’s survival and appearance here secures all the elements that players need to complete the achievement, with only the Lake ending being the final encounter. After Connie and the rest of the party make it to the speedboat, Du’Met makes one last appearance for a final showdown. Throughout the series of QTEs, Connie can help attack Du’Met before he is thrown into the lake. If the rest of the team make it alive prior to the speedboat’s explosion, Connie also manages to swim to the surface safely.
